The Yellow Mill

Teresa Rodríguez Veiga

Project year:

2011

Project of adaptation to hotel use of traditional construction in ruinous state (mill) located on the banks of the river Arnoia.

The mill in Galician society has always been an important part, not only for the economy, but also because it acted as a focus of social relations. Continuing with this line of thought, the proposal is born to rehabilitate the heritage and revalue it by transforming it into a place for a café-bar. That social function of meeting and leisure that is established today in this type of place, is seen as the most suitable also for the mill in question. The chosen construction has situational and constructive characteristics that make it unique; on the one hand part is partially buried in the slope where it is located, but where part of its charm resides is in the mechanical ingenuity that lodges. This is based on the use of bulky gears that manage, with a single wheel, to transmit the driving force from its axis to the 3 grinding wheels of the upper floor.

The project is based on developing in a sufficiently forceful and defined volume which, as a designer, will try to give a new perspective without acting radically on it, as it is personally considered that its aesthetic qualities deserve to be preserved, as well as its relationships. with the natural environment. To achieve this: materials, set of heights between plants and openings that allow the scattering of light. As for the distribution, this revolves around the channel that pre-establishes the areas to be created and will be the "backbone" of both visual and real connections as here are the stairs (3 sections from where you can see the train gears and water passage). This is how a total of 4 floors are created: double-height ground floor where the bars take center stage, emphasizing the spaces and a narrow opening that combines plants protected by a screen decorated with illustrations of the components of a mill (practical + pedagogical + decorative function) ; Mezzanine, as a cozy tapas place; Basement floor, where the services (kitchen, toilets, warehouse,…) are located and Upper floor as an improvised museum of the elements of the grinding (grindstones, moegas, donkeys, etc.) and light chill-out.

In all this the relation between the mill and the water which runs through it is fundamental; in addition to allowing nature to participate in the interior of the building, the flow of water from the canal is linked to the relationships that exist between the different plants; the flow of people who roam freely enjoying and making their own every corner of a mill that revives and restores its social value.
