"Carmilla The Countess of Karnstein" is a free and illustrated adaptation of the classic horror story "Carmilla" written by author Joseph Sheridan Lefanu in 1872.
"Carmilla" is known in the literary imagination for being the first vampire story written in history. It was a story both controversial and innovative, since, beyond being a story with all the typical characteristics of the Gothic novel, it is also a story about two girls who fall in love in the middle of a lot of strange events.
The final format chosen for the project was that of an illustrated album, resulting in a 20x30 cm book (open) composed of 14 folds plus covers.
For the illustrations, a realistic and figurative style was sought, inspired by the work of illustrators such as Santiago Caruso and Ana Juan, resulting in dark, sinister compositions full of details. As for the technique, all the illustrations were done in the traditional way in black Chinese ink on a special 100% cotton engraving paper, with a subsequent process of post-production and digital retouching to correct lights and shadows, add the text and some details and do all the graphic design and the layout.
