Jaime Rosales
Film director and screenwriter
Barcelona, 1970
A photographic image is not something that is found; it is something that is created, that is built. The creative work of the filmmaker will be addressed when he prepares his cinematic matrix and bridges will be established with the creation of photographic images: the phases, the methods, the certainties that are established and also the doubts that arise in his attempt to bring the image to his limits
Graduated with a degree and master's degree in Business Sciences from ESADE, the decisive impetus to his film training came with a scholarship awarded in 1996 to study at the prestigious International School of Cinema and Television of San Antonio dos Baños (EICTV), in Havana and then at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney. With his production company Fresdeval Films, he has developed all his projects as a director since 2000. His films talk about the inability to communicate, the complexity of the family universe and the unexpected irruption of violence in everyday life. A tireless explorer of the possibilities that the audiovisual medium can offer, the films of Jaime Rosales reflect the director's great interest in finding new expressive forms away from the usual conventions of cinematic language.
Among the recognitions for his film work, the Critics' Award at the Cannes Festival ( Las horas del día, 2003), the Goya for Best Film and Best Director ( La soledad, 2007), the Critics' Award at the San Sebastián Festival ( Tiro en la cabeza, 2008) and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival ( Hermosa juventud , 2014). His latest film Los girasoles silvestres (2022) was named best film at the 2022 San Sebastián Film Festival.
He has given courses, lectures and conferences in a large number of universities, film schools and art centers. In March 2014, the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris held a retrospective of all his work.
He is Knight of French Arts and Letters and National Culture Award of the Generalitat of Catalonia (2015).
In 2018, he published El lápiz y la cámara , a book that reflects on cinema and artistic creation.
