On Tuesday, February 27, we will be visited by X. Antón Castro, graduate in Philosophy and Letters and in French Literature and doctorate in Art History. Member of the International Association of Art Critics of Paris, he was a professor of contemporary art and taught master's degrees and courses at different universities. He has contributed to several magazines of art, thought and literature, curated more than sixty exhibitions around the world and written about twenty books on art and contemporary artists. In recent years he was director of the Cervantes Institute in Milan and the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain.
X. Antón will tell us about the graphic work of the painter and engraver Xosé Conde Corbal (1923-1999), whose birth centenary was celebrated last year with events and exhibitions in several locations around the country. Conde Corbal bequeathed a huge body of work in which he tackled a diverse subject, developed in different techniques and supports with great expressive sensitivity. His graphic work is very relevant from an aesthetic and technical point of view, but also, especially, in terms of the continuity of commitment to the country's culture, collecting the witness of the Us generation. Some members of this group and other distinguished Galicians were guides and even collaborators of the artist, such as Vicente Risco, R. Otero Pedrayo, Xaquín Lorenzo, Ferro Couselo, Celso Emilio Ferreiro, Isaac Díaz Pardo, X. Neira Vilas or Carlos Casares. Thus, Conde Corbal developed an exhaustive work of expressive registration and dissemination of Galician cultural and natural heritage through thousands of engravings on ethnography, material culture, landscapes, monuments, flora and fauna.
Other important milestones of his graphic production were the series of engravings on the work of Valle-Inclán and his contribution to historical memory in the series O Fardel da Guerra. These plates were republished as a book in 2023 by the Exma. Provincial Council of Pontevedra who kindly donated some copies to our school and which will be given to the students of Illustration and Graphic Design with the best academic performance in the first semester of this year. There are also copies available for consultation in the center's library.
