In the turbulent process of implementing the future Degree in Design and Creation in Pontevedra for the 2020-2021 academic year, the educational community of the Art and Design Schools (EASDs) of Galicia - dependent on the Ministry of Education, University and Vocational Training - is attending with perplexity the series of statements published since June by members of the University of Vigo in the Galician press, justifying the offer of this new degree in the need to respond to the social demand for higher university-level design studies, according to them, non-existent still in Galicia.
The truth is that since 2005 the network of EASDs in Galicia has taught the Higher Studies in Design, equivalent to the old diplomas, and since 2010 it has been teaching the Higher Artistic Education in Design, equivalent to a university degree, in the specialties of graphic design and design interiors at the EASD Antonio Faílde de Ourense, EASD Pablo Picasso de A Coruña and EASD Ramón Falcón de Lugo, and fashion design and product design at the EASD Mestre Mateo de Santiago, providing the productive sector and society in general with professionals qualified in a number of studies publicly funded design superiors.
It is important to emphasize that since the publication of the LOE in its article 45 et seq., in Royal Decree 1614/2009 of October 26, which establishes the organization of Higher Artistic Education in music, dance, dramatic art, conservation and restoration of goods cultural, plastic arts and design, higher education in the Spanish State is no longer the exclusive competence of universities, but also of the higher schools of the specialties mentioned above.
The Higher Degree obtained at the end of these studies is included in level 2 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education and is equivalent to a university degree, for all purposes, as stated in Article 8 of Royal Decree 21/2015 of 23 January
These four-year and 240 ECTS studies have a very affordable enrollment in economic terms, a low student/teacher ratio (1/10) in the practical and theoretical-practical disciplines and work with notable student success, high job placement rates, and high degree of recognition by the productive and professional sector. The excellence of its students' Final Thesis has been recognized with awards from prestigious state and international professional associations such as ADG-FAD or AD&D.
The teaching staff of the four Galician EASDs are composed of teaching professionals with up-to-date training in their respective specialties, among whom are numerous PhDs in Fine Arts, Audiovisual Communication, Art History, etc...
On the other hand, the Network of EASDs in Galicia obtained the quality certificate ER-0225/2019, ISO 9001, from the AENOR agency, a seal that accredits the consolidation of a quality management system in the schools that make up the network. The certificate is also a recognition of the excellence of the teachings they impart and the artistic training of future professionals in the plastic arts and design. In addition, the Superior Design Degree of the network of EASDs in Galicia is subject to the evaluation of the Agency for the Quality of the University System of Galicia (ACSUG).
The EASDs are currently promoting the study phase for the development and upcoming implementation of their own postgraduate studies: the Master's in Higher Artistic Design Education. From the Network of EASDs in Galicia we demand respect for the work developed these years in the Higher Design Education which, we think, has given in recent years and continues to give today, an adequate response to the demands of the productive environment and society in general in this respect. We ask the promoters of the new degree and the spokespersons of the University of Vigo not to confuse public opinion and to be rigorous in their statements and to the media, to contrast the information before writing headlines that do not correspond to reality and cause misinformation in society .
